GateWall Mail Security is a legacy corporate email server security and anti-spam solution developed by the cybersecurity company Entensys. It was primarily designed to protect small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from inbound and outbound email threats.
While it was a popular choices for on-premises server architecture in the early 2010s, Entensys eventually rebranded and consolidated its technology into its broader UserGate product catalog. Core Capabilities
Multi-Engine Antivirus Scanning: The software achieved proactive malware detection by routing traffic through three parallel antivirus systems: Kaspersky, Panda, and Entensys’s proprietary cloud-based Zero-Hour engine.
Data Loss Prevention (DLP): GateWall scanned outbound messaging using document-matching criteria and regular expressions to prevent accidental exfiltration of trade secrets, financials, or customer records.
Lemmatisation & Statistical Anti-Spam: In addition to standard Bayesian filtering, it featured a specialized “Lemmatizer” tool. This allowed administrators to assign point values to inflected variations of words, triggering a block if a customized point threshold was crossed.
Upstream Email Archiving: The platform provided automated backups of messaging data processed directly upstream of spam and virus isolation. Admins could configure rules to backup incoming messages, outgoing messages, or both. Architecture & Deployment
GateWall Mail Security was built as a software appliance primarily optimized for Microsoft Windows operational systems (ranging from Windows XP and Server 2003 up to Windows 7 and Server 2008). It sat on the edge of the corporate network to field messages before they reached user mailboxes. The platform operated effectively in two configurations:
As a standalone, local secure email gateway routing external traffic.
Integrated directly via IMAP synchronization with remote, heavy enterprise email deployments including Microsoft Exchange 2003 and IBM Lotus Domino R7.
